Manual Therapy

Myofascial release (MFR) is a form of manual therapy which involves the application of gentle sustained pressure that elongates fascial adhesions so that tissue can return to proper realignment. Myofascial release helps relieve acute pain, treat injuries and to promote relaxation. There are many benefits of myofascial release including reduced pain, decreased fascia tension and increased joint range of motion. Myofascial pain can be caused by myofascial trigger points. Trigger points are hyperirritable spot or palpable nodules located in soft tissues.

Manual Therapy - F.A.Q.

Manual therapy is a hands-on technique used by physiotherapists to treat musculoskeletal pain and dysfunction. It includes joint mobilization, soft tissue manipulation and muscle stretching to restore movement and relieve pain.

Myofascial Release is a specialized manual therapy technique that targets the fascia – the connective tissue surrounding muscles. MFR helps release tension, reduce pain and improve flexibility by gently stretching tight or restricted fascia.

Unlike general massage, MFR focuses on long, sustained pressure to release fascial restrictions. It’s more targeted, deeper and often used as part of a structured treatment plan in physiotherapy.

Manual therapy is generally safe and well-tolerated. You may feel slight discomfort during deep release techniques, but it should never be intensely painful. Therapists always work within your comfort level.

The number of sessions depends on the severity of your condition and individual response. Some patients feel relief after a few sessions, while others may need a longer treatment plan for lasting results.

Yes, manual therapy is often combined with exercises, electrotherapy, dry needling, or posture correction for a holistic approach to healing and rehabilitation.

Some patients may experience mild soreness, fatigue, or temporary increase in symptoms after a session — these effects usually resolve within 24–48 hours and indicate tissue response to the treatment.

MFR is safe for most people, but it may not be recommended for those with certain medical conditions like blood clotting disorders, acute inflammation, or recent surgery without clearance. A proper physiotherapy evaluation is essential.

At SHERIN’S PHYSIOCARE in Kazhakkoottam, Trivandrum, our skilled physiotherapists deliver personalized manual therapy and MFR to treat the root cause of pain — not just the symptoms. We ensure safe, gentle, and effective care tailored to your condition.
